summit of the non-aligned

Mount Vladimir

Unless from under a rock or out of the loop, by now, the average curious skateboarder should spontaneously associate September with skate festival season via, in Croatia, the classic Vladimir Film Festival - now flaunting a brand new website, complete with the 2021 dates and program to also celebrate its supposedly tenth, really eleventh edition and, in Bulgaria, the more recent but just as motivationally driven Summit of the Non-Aligned, which LIVE has highlighted before - most notably here. Summit is taking place right now, this September 9-12th in Belgrade, followed by Vladimir this September 16-19th in Fažana and Pula.

So in order to efficiently echo this stream of great news, what's better than an exclusive recap of the previous edition of Vladimir - one that did take the hit of all the pandemic-related circumstances, but did happen in 2020 - from the perspective of the Amnesia Skateshop crew from Sliven, Bulgaria. To be accurate, the words are by Martin Dechev and Yavor Ski; the photos courtesy of Veliko Balabanov, already the author of this Deo Katunga edit for Stinky Socks and of the new Витошa Skateboards video, scheduled for screening at Vladimir this year; and as far as the accompanying moving pictures are concerned, then that is their former production for Amnesia that they already shot with the 2020 festival in mind.

Once again, feel free to do yourself a favor and keep in touch with the imminent frenzy of Vladimir here (and word on the streets is, their platform is bound to keep getting more and more interesting), and with the one of the Summit here. Feeling like an even deeper dive into the myth? You can also (re-)read our recap of Vladimir 2019, loaded with Josh Stewart artefacts but really cool surprises of many other kinds, here!

Calentar

David Soda from Serbia - LIVE already introduced him before via an interview regarding Belgrade skate festival, Summit of the Non-Aligned. Well today, his agenda has all to do with "CALENTAR", an adventure flick starring the PRVNS crew hitchhiking their way to Barcelona - a true story that eventually took them through the Spanish cities of Valencia, Murcia, Granada and Huelva, then Faro and Lisbon in Portugal, marking just as many chapters and slices of life, amongst others.

Oh yeah, them guys skate and as a trained viewer, you're bound to realize that soon enough, just like many folks at the latest edition of Vladimir Film Festival realized a few months back already, in between drinks on the Brioni islands...

Exclusively, David recounts:

"Snow was coming, and it only took us two days to decide how to avoid it.

Our jobs were behind us, and the Iberian peninsula would be our destination of choice for our sun-soaked hitchhiking journey into the unknown.

Pockets full of rocks, socks of mushrooms, and wishes of freedom - we ended up there, somewhere in an industry-ran society where art stands on a slippery edge.

Famous cities beat, and each beat we felt.

On our way in search for the lost, only to find the worst, we tailored a suit for our the mirror of our phantasmal reality. Stolen beverages, crispy stars, known strangers and the dizzy motorway is what you will see in said mirror. Enjoy!" - David Soda

Summit of the Non-Aligned / 5W's!

Skateboarding has definitely been seeing the flourishing of independent happenings, as though a form of natural resistance to mass culture by its most sincerely devoted enthusiasts. As the official 2019 program for the ninth (!) edition of the Croatian Vladimir Film Festival just dropped, in Belgrade, the Summit of the Non-Aligned is just about to start (from today on, till September 15th), and as expected from passionate people whose communication is more akin to sponataneous expression than malign marketing, it probably wouldn't have caught the attention of a wider scale audience if it hadn't been for word of mouth from acquainted artists who linked us up (i.e. Glen Fox and Nez Pez). Five minutes later and a phone call was in order...

Check out the Summit's website and Instagram feed, and enjoy the interview below, with activist David Soda.

RIOS x BELGRADE ZOO

The two crustiest Eastern crews are back! Reuniting with the concept of last year's "Dunja" (which you can peep alongside an interview here), our Budapest brethren: the devin that is the Rios crew recently went back to Serbia for more urban life and shared street moments with the local Belgrade Zoo. Rumors of an official, upcoming twinning of the two regions have since been spread.

Still Belgrade-related - if around or nearby, please do yourself a favor and take a gander at this sick local event, imminently occuring: the Summit of the Non-Aligned will take place on the 12th-15th of September, and happens to be a skate festival skate with a damn fine selection and a nice touch to the presentation you really shouldn't miss on Instagram. More info on the way...

In the same vein and chain of events, the program for this year's (ninth!) edition of the now classic Vladimir Film Festival just dropped and it's heavier than ever (like with every new iteration). Check it out and book your tickets - not even necessarily in that order.
