Javier Varillas

(out)performance

Javier Varillas, the Spain-born and currently Prague-based filmmaker already behind, most notably, « THE ULTIMATE PESSERTIVE REMIX » screened at Vladimir Film Festival 2019, presented his latest work at Vladimir again, in 2021, under the form of « (OUT)PERFORMANCE » - co-featuring the talents of locals Kuba Novotný, Daniel Dauš, Roman Špaček, Payo Labbé and Štěpán Janda to « tell the story of a group of thirty-plus-year-old skateboarders, united by the tireless motivation for searching » and exploiting their immediate urban terrain. Javier's first venture into the world of HD also marks a more personal spin on his usual approach and results in what he describes as « an intimate testimony of commitment, determination and friendship ».

The video was notably featured alongside words by Kuba Novotný himself on the website of Czech Crook Magazine. Boardmag also has interviews with Javier and Štěpán up, if you really want to dive in!

The Ultimate Pessertive Remix

"The Ultimate Pessertive Remix" (just recently screened at Vladimir) originates from Pilsen in Czech Republic and, even more accurately, from the mind of "conceptualist" Javier Varillas who, with the help of co-filmer Michal Majer, meticulously assembled the past two years worth of footage collected by the local crew Pessertive and its aficionados, Pessertivity. The resulting piece is a sensory overload of an audiovisual composition involving Panasonic camcorders, surprising styles, round fish-eye lenses and electro-hypnotic music as though to ensure that the intended trance is complete.

A colorful mixtape even available on DVD from the guys, it looks like!

VLADIMIR FILM FESTIVAL 2019 / REPORT

Vladimir - for the obscure.

The black sheep has only been developing exponentially over its now nine years of existence, and so has been the attention it's received with, this year, an approximation of three hundred people showing up from the whole planet over to attend this local festival in Fažana, Croatia - a little Istrian port town with a loaded history, testimonies of which still stand under the form of monuments everywhere (currently ensuring a steady flow of tourism), and the sensibilities of the inhabitants.

What originally started out as a very local initiative consisting in video screenings at the local skatepark quickly outgrew that embryonic phase as its instigators, Nikola Racan (of 'Solsticij' full-length video underground fame) and the Skateboard klub August Šenoa locals grew to use modern communication tools to get further and further in touch with universally renowned skate artists and documentarists - whether in the photo or video field.

Good vibes

Spend the whole day on a spot, without necessarily skating, know the story behind the few graphs on the spot, maybe film some tricks and take the opportunity to immortalize what’s going on around. “Being part of that shit”, as states Josh Kalis. Marcos Lozano Cantillo makes us discover this late 90’s vibe, still alive nowadays in the heart of Barcelona, at the spot of Sants.

And for the most interested of you, we have three "Demokratia 2" zines by photographer David Susko for you to win.  Head over now to LIVE Instagram account.
