Phil Evans

Inside the Boxx

"DORKZONE 2: LE BOXX" is a new trippy montage by Dr. Phil Evans (already interviewed here) based around illustrations by Mike O'Shea, produced by Nils Svensson for the notorious skate school in Malmö, Sweden: Bryggeriet. Now, the luckiest of you might remember its premiere at the latest edition of Vladimir, and some might even remember the first "DORKZONE" (that the crew also just dropped online); this rather experimental piece remains funny and beautifully crafted regardless, and it might tickle your urges of pouring concrete and finding almost-spots, too!

"LE BOXX" is also the name of the latest skate café in Malmö and, as of recently, the whole Dorkzone universe is available under the form of material products one can already peep here.

VLADIMIR FILM FESTIVAL 2019 / REPORT

Vladimir - for the obscure.

The black sheep has only been developing exponentially over its now nine years of existence, and so has been the attention it's received with, this year, an approximation of three hundred people showing up from the whole planet over to attend this local festival in Fažana, Croatia - a little Istrian port town with a loaded history, testimonies of which still stand under the form of monuments everywhere (currently ensuring a steady flow of tourism), and the sensibilities of the inhabitants.

What originally started out as a very local initiative consisting in video screenings at the local skatepark quickly outgrew that embryonic phase as its instigators, Nikola Racan (of 'Solsticij' full-length video underground fame) and the Skateboard klub August Šenoa locals grew to use modern communication tools to get further and further in touch with universally renowned skate artists and documentarists - whether in the photo or video field.

Combine Phil Evans and the Mortensen brothers, what do you get? Some "fun", caught the right way… Add illustrator Mike O'Shea, and you're in for a deep dive out of this grey reality of ours, and a breath of fresh air! Come on, now, just click on it…

Saint Denis

We announced the project of a documenary by Phil Evans on Irish young man Denis Lynn, recently and it finally is available online! Meet a young man that seems able to get away with about anything…

"Saint Denis", as seen by Phil Evans and Samu Karvonen!

You may already be familiar with Phil Evans' name due to the well-earned notoriety of his past films such as "Format Perspective" or "Coping Mechanism", experiments such as "Paper Cut London" or maybe even the elusive "Scrum Tilly Lush", a full-length skate video filmed all over Europe on nothing but Super 8 film. This Spring, the Irish filmmaker strikes again with "SAINT DENIS", a documentary about not-less-Irish skateboarder Denis Lynn (yes, Conhuir's brother!), for Carhartt Work In Progress. Premieres of the film are going down worldwide as we speak and, with the Paris one just around the corner (scheduled for March 28th), we thought now would be a great time to catch up with Phil, but also with Denis' Finnish Carhartt WIP teammate Samu Karvonen who's also prominently featured in the film. Now and without any further delay...

Gibbo

As a part of his Lightbox series, the always experimenting Irish filmmaker Phil Evans, just released a new edit, dedicated to the Golden Hour sessions around Malmö of Daniel Rabia. You most likely will have noticed his quite atmospheric soundtrack, specifically composed for the project, just as for the totality of Lightbox, by Andrew Gibbons, AKA "Gibbo". Here, Phil documents him in the process, mimicking the techniques Gibbo uses, as he is filming him with an ancient toy, the good ol' Fisherprice PXL 2000, filming on audio tapes, just like Andrew recorded all his work for Lightbox on K7 tapes also. In both cases, the final feel is quite unique, and it makes the beauty of it! You can now cope the full soundtrack for Lightbox, here.
