  1. Mount Vladimir

Unless from under a rock or out of the loop, by now, the average curious skateboarder should spontaneously associate September with skate festival season via, in Croatia, the classic Vladimir Film Festival - now flaunting a brand new website, complete with the 2021 dates and program to also celebrate its supposedly tenth, really eleventh edition and, in Bulgaria, the more recent but just as motivationally driven Summit of the Non-Aligned, which LIVE has highlighted before - most notably here. Summit is taking place right now, this September 9-12th in Belgrade, followed by Vladimir this September 16-19th in Fažana and Pula.

So in order to efficiently echo this stream of great news, what's better than an exclusive recap of the previous edition of Vladimir - one that did take the hit of all the pandemic-related circumstances, but did happen in 2020 - from the perspective of the Amnesia Skateshop crew from Sliven, Bulgaria. To be accurate, the words are by Martin Dechev and Yavor Ski; the photos courtesy of Veliko Balabanov, already the author of this Deo Katunga edit for Stinky Socks and of the new Витошa Skateboards video, scheduled for screening at Vladimir this year; and as far as the accompanying moving pictures are concerned, then that is their former production for Amnesia that they already shot with the 2020 festival in mind.

Once again, feel free to do yourself a favor and keep in touch with the imminent frenzy of Vladimir here (and word on the streets is, their platform is bound to keep getting more and more interesting), and with the one of the Summit here. Feeling like an even deeper dive into the myth? You can also (re-)read our recap of Vladimir 2019, loaded with Josh Stewart artefacts but really cool surprises of many other kinds, here!

  2. MIMPI FILM FESTIVAL / "Ruído" / PREMIERE

Despite the ongoing exponential development of instantaneous Internet connections, social network platforms and low-cost airlines - technologies bound to help the average skateboarder meet some others as to contemplate new perspectives, new landscapes, new souls - certain particular horizons still seem to struggle more than others in terms of retranscription. Oftentimes the idea erupts, but gets stranded on the way, exhausted from the length of the journey, eventually hitting the language barrier face first. Not everybody has to be an English speaker, a media nerd or even aiming at reaching out to others, after all; nevertheless, those ruptures in communication will get in the way of those trying to comprehend as much of the world as possible, like crackling on the line. Today on LIVE Skateboard Media, it is Pedro Damasio you are getting introduced to, along with his peers' work on the Rio De Janeiro, Brazil-based skate film and photo festival: Mimpi. We went there - twice - and we loved it: beyond all appearances and behind the banners, Pedro and his friends like to play around with crazy concepts. Last year's edition's was the one of noise, or "Ruído", and the resulting clip, featured above, is pretty experimental; a daring stand from an event this popular, only proving the sincerity in Pedro's progressive will, and the love in his approach. Plus there's a lot of skateboarding to boot, as a tribute to the practice we all owe everything to!

  3. PREMIERE / Vladimir 2018 / George Toland / INTERVIEW

Them lads never quit it! Over the past month the Internet has graced us with "Teddie", London head George Toland's R.A.D. new full-length video compiling one year worth of skateboarding by his crew filmed in many different locations throughout Europe; and last week, we were presenting you this interview and photo gallery of George Booth-Cole, the photographer of the posse and a talented one at that, who happens to document many of his mates' prowess on thirty-five millimeter film when the other George aims at the same in moving form via his trusted VX-1000. Both homonymous G's are no strangers to the most important skate video festival in Europe, the now longtime running Vladimir Film Festival occuring every September in Croatia (the 2017 documentary on which George was down to help out with already, contributing chunks of skate footage); and actually here they are today, showcasing a recap of some of the intense street skating that took place in between the exhibitions and screenings at the latest, 2018 edition of Vladimir, all filmed in the city of Pula, Croatia over the course of four days. The two played their respective roles as documentarists so well, we just had to catch up with the one who favors colors and tapes (click here for an interview with the other George), if anything just come up with enough banter to illustrate and punctuate with their souvenirs of stoke, sunshine and miscellaneous, sound shenanigans!

  4. "Vladimir" / PREMIERE

In seven years of existence, Nikola Racan's Vladimir Film Festival has slowly but surely grown to become a remarkable institution as part of the European - not to say worldwide - skate scene, gathering hundreds of skateboarders from the whole world over in the small croatian village of Fažana every year. On location every year since (nearly) the beginning, Aymeric Nocus picked 2017 as the year to finally bring his video camera with him, as an effort to capture and share as much of that effervescence as possible, with precious VX-1000 assistance from George Toland and Rémi Luciani who documented the energy of the skate sessions. The final product is now premiereing on LIVE Skateboard Media, after physical premieres at the Mimpi Film Festival in Rio De Janeiro and the Roundabout Fest in Berlin... Worldwide connexions!

  5. VLADIMIR FILM FESTIVAL 2019 / REPORT

    Vladimir - for the obscure.

The black sheep has only been developing exponentially over its now nine years of existence, and so has been the attention it's received with, this year, an approximation of three hundred people showing up from the whole planet over to attend this local festival in Fažana, Croatia - a little Istrian port town with a loaded history, testimonies of which still stand under the form of monuments everywhere (currently ensuring a steady flow of tourism), and the sensibilities of the inhabitants.

What originally started out as a very local initiative consisting in video screenings at the local skatepark quickly outgrew that embryonic phase as its instigators, Nikola Racan (of 'Solsticij' full-length video underground fame) and the Skateboard klub August Šenoa locals grew to use modern communication tools to get further and further in touch with universally renowned skate artists and documentarists - whether in the photo or video field.

  6. RIOS x BELGRADE ZOO

The two crustiest Eastern crews are back! Reuniting with the concept of last year's "Dunja" (which you can peep alongside an interview here), our Budapest brethren: the devin that is the Rios crew recently went back to Serbia for more urban life and shared street moments with the local Belgrade Zoo. Rumors of an official, upcoming twinning of the two regions have since been spread.

Still Belgrade-related - if around or nearby, please do yourself a favor and take a gander at this sick local event, imminently occuring: the Summit of the Non-Aligned will take place on the 12th-15th of September, and happens to be a skate festival skate with a damn fine selection and a nice touch to the presentation you really shouldn't miss on Instagram. More info on the way...

In the same vein and chain of events, the program for this year's (ninth!) edition of the now classic Vladimir Film Festival just dropped and it's heavier than ever (like with every new iteration). Check it out and book your tickets - not even necessarily in that order.

  7. INTERVIEW / George Booth Cole / GALLERY

To start things off with a pun only the most experienced with Japanese skate videos of you will get, George Booth is tight! Now past the cringeworthy introduction point, let's still dwell over how justified the prior remark is. For the past few years, Gee Bee Cee has been very involved teaming up with George Toland and the Serious Adult crew (the one that recently brought you the full-length video "Teddie"); all of them are fueling their scene, having a hand saving the classic London spot Southbank, and documenting the current generation of London rippers - one they are part of. Booth's language of choice happens to be the one of photography and for a while now, he's been sharing his works and displaying his zines quite visibly on Instagram, a curated yet abundant selection of quite unique fragments of time frozen on black and white film, then self-developed. Last September, the whole crew went (again!) to attend the Vladimir Film Festival in Croatia for a few days; to tease the resulting edit by George Toland, coming out on LIVE real soon, here's a gallery of George Booth Cole's works, images from the latest Vladimir but also from the making of "Teddie" and some from a project in Japan. And the lad looked like he had things to say aplenty, so we caught up with him for a few!

  8. Summit of the Non-Aligned / 5W's!

Skateboarding has definitely been seeing the flourishing of independent happenings, as though a form of natural resistance to mass culture by its most sincerely devoted enthusiasts. As the official 2019 program for the ninth (!) edition of the Croatian Vladimir Film Festival just dropped, in Belgrade, the Summit of the Non-Aligned is just about to start (from today on, till September 15th), and as expected from passionate people whose communication is more akin to sponataneous expression than malign marketing, it probably wouldn't have caught the attention of a wider scale audience if it hadn't been for word of mouth from acquainted artists who linked us up (i.e. Glen Fox and Nez Pez). Five minutes later and a phone call was in order...

Check out the Summit's website and Instagram feed, and enjoy the interview below, with activist David Soda.
  9. "VELVET" / Spencer Legebokoff / INTERVIEW

Spencer Legebokoff has been shooting skate photos and videos in Canada for a long time now, but especially got his name out there on the international scale a fistful of years ago with « WALTZ » - an edit filmed around his region of origin that is West Kootenay, British Columbia - which he submitted and came to showcase at the 2018 edition of Vladimir Film Festival, the now classic independent event and cultural phenomenon occuring yearly thanks to the passion-driven locals of Fažana, Croatia. Being the uplifting experience it's really crafted to be, Spencer then came back home inspired to fully pursue his own vision in his skate filmmaking and what logically ensued is this new piece: « VELVET », a video willing to lean towards a more contemplative direction - but not at the expense of some great, sincere local skateboarding - which we are happy to bring you today, alongside a full interview with Spencer himself regarding the project, just below!

  10. "FINTA" / PREMIERE / Dino Coce / INTERVIEW

As his Instagram account brimming with quite the unique combo of tech skills and creativity on and off the board (like they all say) can demonstrate to the layman, Dino Coce has been ripping the streets of Split, Croatia for a long time; and, while his name has been circulating beyond his home region over the yesteryear - after his part in Raul Žgomba's "TABULA RASA" - his own, longtime activity as a filmmaker putting together his personal video project: "FINTA" had mostly remained a secret to everyone but the most initiated and local. In fact, one would have had to be there (and sober) in person at the 2017 edition of the Vladimir Film Festival to catch the public broadcasting of the trailer - but on those who somehow were, it left an impression like no other, foreshadowing Michel Gondry-esque practical effects and a generally inventive editing direction at the service of equally thoughtful, and honest, street skateboarding mostly captured through a simple Canon XM-2.

Fast forward to now, twenty twenty and Dino finally completed "FINTA", after over half a decade of work and just in time for what should have been the tenth Vladimir (turned edition nine-and-a-half due to the pandemic). The corresponding DVD and D.I.Y. screen-printed merch is available right here, right now and as for a sneak preview, today, LIVE is presenting a section of the film dedicated to no one in particular but a specific location in Split: the mishmash of the historic Diocletian’s Palace and Strossmayer Park aka. Đardin, both of which Dino honored with his own reinterpretation all the while openly embracing influences by the likes of Colin Read. Needless to say, the questions for the following interview spontaneously raised themselves...
