Hugo Maillard

PREMIERE / Bears Skateshop "BEARS VIDEO" / INTERVIEW

The Rennes scene has been renowned for its constantly bubbling activity for a good while, now; the most diligent of now-O.G. heads definitely remember Pacôme Gabrillagues' video works, most notably the full-length "CROSSWALK" back in 2010 - at the dawn of the rise in popularity and traction of independent european creation - or maybe more contemporarily, the entire Galerie 126 adventure. Théo Le Guével's newest full-length VX-1000 video, "UNCENSO-RENNES", bears witness to how the recent generations have been insisting to honor such a rich cultural legacy ever since and, in between more Rennes activists throughout the ages, Laurent Ségal also fits right in since at the wheel of Bears Skateshop, formerly Bamboo, open on location since 2004. Thus in a way, it's almost two decades that the release of this "BEARS VIDEO" by Yoann Cailleteau is celebrating - but not just that as, given the variety in the profiles composing its sum, it also reflects the human adventure aspect of skateboarding, on one hand; and healthy doses of elbow grease smoothness, on the other hand. Checking in on everyone involved just had to be done, as to duly honor the Rennes scene as far as we're concerned - and they all turned out to have plenty to say, too, as the joined interview can attest, below!

Hugo

If the eponymous interactive T.V. show was avant-garde in how it trained you to hammer the keys of your now-antiquated phone with a frenzy strangely reminiscent of the youth of today, le sieur Maillard, as far as he's concerned, has been more into the sharpening of his finger skills via practice on the actual piano, as of late. And, while your older-brother-or-comparable is most likely still sobbing from emotion at the souvenir of the closing segment in "CROSSWALK" (the Rennes video by Pacôme Gabrillagues from two thousand ten), the protagonist of exactly that just recorded his first E.P.: "NI LE MATIN, NI L'APRES-MIDI", thirty-one minutes carved onto a vinyl already available from the Dukes of Magenta, who've gone as far as devoting a full feature on their website about the event, here.

And since what goes around comes around, Hugo also derusted his fancy footwork for the occasion of a celebratory skate clip, itself composed by Louis Deschamps of Tonic, for Magenta. In the end, the groove proves to be the same - beat and upbeat!

Giddy 11

Romain Batard, the French skate filmmaker LIVE really shouldn't have to introduce to you by now just on the basis of his longevity in the field, is back today with the eleventh chapter in his series-turned-saga "GIDDY" - and pretty clearly the most ambitious one that is, also including contributions from some equally prestigious video fiends, for a timeline just short of twenty minutes in total - but rest assured you won't catch a break!

On the menu: stunts from the usual suspects - Edouard DepazValentin BauerJoseph BiaisLilian FevMarc-A BarbierRemy Taveira - but also many others (including Max Palmer, Sylvain Tognelli, Mika Germond, Dustin Dollin... Quite the universal roster!), immortalized on Parisian spots aplenty - some classic ones and some more rare nugs, all approached with a sweet creative twist. Out of many examples, one of Soy's many fountains gets reinvented (and that's despite the mysterious disappearance of the corresponding Instagram account), but really it's the whole landscape of the French capital that gets dripped into new colors here, from the most famous plazas to the most unknown street corners possible (e.g.. le Dôme's three-flat-three, or the benches at République)... All in great fun as well, just bathing in the rhythm of the daily sessions.

Chic, chic, chic!

And as a complementary bonus, we are happy to share with y'all this photo gallery, by Max Verret!

Charles' tip: "New York 1993"!

"Such a must see!" Or when the Rennes locals go on holidays in NYC… What do you think happened? A storm of hammers, that's what happened, with even an Ellington featuring! Nice find, Charles!

Giddy-oh!

Always a laugh, always different faces… Skating captured between Paris, Rennes, New York City and Barcelona that will make you ring your homies!

Giddy #3

So, if this new edit by Romain Batard does not make you want to buy a plane ticket to NYC in order to get silly in the streets with the homies over there, well, you might be a little dead inside… As usual, the mood is good, Hugo Maillard manages to take aback and Alexis Jamet goes beast mode! Just perfect.

Parisii / le remix / Group Edit

All right, so Monday is off, and this should put the fire in you: the homies, buddies, friends and bros section from our Parisii remix… Three years of skating around Paris amounts to a rather large group of people joining the sesh. Hell, you can even spot a couple world renown dudes in there, oh and that guy Rémy Taveira. And République getting built! All under the musical supervision of another Parisii head, Vincent Perrin!

Giddy #2

Romain Batard is back with a new Giddy episode, at the same time Steve Malet is moving back to Paris. Talk about timing… Oh, and Hugo Maillard goes all the way to Brussels to invent the nosegrind shifty out! Seriously…

Tonic alert!

If you dig serious skateboarding, this might not be for you… Then again, this is not how they do it at Tonic!
